However in stanza two an anger builds the unanswered questions asked in the final stanza suggest that there are no answers or comforts in the face of death to the question ‘what made fatuous sunbeams toil… at all?’ there is simply no response. In stanza one the sun is described as ‘the kind old sun’, has a gentle touch and Owen focuses on the sun’s ability to help the soldier. Owen uses the personification to suggest that although nature if powerful, that it is helpless in the face of conflict. In Futility the sun is personified throughout the poem. These indented lines could mimic the faltering charge with the rhyme mirroring the sense of impending doom. Throughout the poem each stanza features indented lines – the last word of each of these lines rhyme – ‘blunder’d/hundred’. This could offer the reader the sense of riding in to the battle with the soldiers. Charge comprises of six stanzas, varying in length from six to twelve lines and offers a chronological narrative. An alternative interpretation could be that Owen uses the structure to show how conflict has cut short the life of the soldier – in the middle of his life. As a sonnet is traditionally associated with love, Owen could be suggesting that the effectively with conflict their can be no love. This positive representation of conflict could be linked to Tennyson’s role of Poet Laureate under Queen Victoria’s reign.įutility mimics a sonnet but the form is disrupted as Owen splits the poem in to two seven-line stanzas. On the contrary Charge is patriotic with Tennyson celebrating the courage and obedience of the soldiers – this can be seen in his use of ‘glory, honour/noble’. The use of the pronoun ‘him’ in the opening line suggests this could be any soldier from World War I demonstrating the number of men who would remain unnamed and unclaimed during this conflict. Tennyson uses the poem to show the admiration and bravery of the solders in their determination to obey orders even though the orders were foolish.įutility could be considered as an elegy for the unnamed solider and opens with a tender and sad tone shifting to pointlessness in the second stanza. In contrast Tennyson’s Charge depicts a disastrous battle during the Crimean War and therefore shows the disbelief and horror of conflict. Owen uses this soldier to question to point of life being created it can be destroyed so easily. The poem focuses on the effect of conflict and is focused on an injured, probably dead soldier. The title of Wilfred Owen’s ‘Futility’ captures the dominant sense of uselessness and helplessness in relation to conflict, felt by the soldiers in the face of their comrade’s recent death. How is conflict presented in the poems Futility and The Charge of the Light Brigade? Any questions about this essay, please let me know. Please look at this model response and compare to your own response. I have used the same SPECSLIMS structure you were asked to use. I have also answered the question that I set for homework. You must explain your quotes and link them to the question – talk a lot about a little rather than making lots of limited points. You must answer the question – each paragraph should refer to the question. You must use PQE to structure your paragraphs – this will avoid no quotes and no explanations.By May you will know all of the poems like the back of your hand so do not panic. I have seen loads of potential in your responses and with more practice I have no doubt by May you will be awesome. I am generally very impressed given you have not completed a Literature essay since your Shakespeare Controlled Assessment in July. I have marked your essays – well done to those who completed this work and also those who handed their books in.
